The course that helped me kickstart my surface pattern design business!

I have always loved to create. At a young age I began drawing and to this day still have notebooks full of sketches from my Seventeen magazines. I have a degree in Communications/Advertising and taught myself Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop almost 15 years ago to complement my degree. I’m still learning every day! I have three kids ages 11, 9 and 6. When my oldest was a toddler I opened an Etsy shop and made all kinds of baby accessories as my creative outlet while caring for littles. I realized after 8 years of sewing morning and night, that my true passion was in the fabric. I recently shut the…

DIY Face Mask for Mask Shortage

Sewers all over the country are coming together in an amazing way and creating homemade face masks due to the shortage of masks caused by covid-19. This sewing tutorial for a face mask for the covid-19 mask shortage will hopefully give you an easy step by step guide that even the most novice sewist can follow! The shortage of masks for health care providers, those with compromised immune systems, nursing homes and even those with the virus, is so frightening. I was lucky to stumble across a Facebook group this week with over 6500 local fellow sewers from in and around Northwest Indiana who made me aware of this situation…

How we painted our stairs black

This is one of those projects that I wish I would have done the moment we moved in. Why did we wait so long for this stair makeover?! For some reason it’s very nerve wracking to paint original wood. Putting paint on a floor surface feels even more wrong! I’m here to tell you, Just do it! You won’t be sorry. It will make your old stairs feel so fresh! When we moved into our old home, we were excited to see mostly hardwood floors. Terrible, nasty, hardwood floors…but hardwood nonetheless. A few years back we got some quotes to refinish the wood. It’s expensive ya’ll, so we decided to…

DIY Industrial Curtain rods + extra long DIY curtains

When we moved into our house about 4 years ago, we didn’t have a lot of money for renovations, but we did have A LOT of windows to cover. I’m thankful for our many windows letting in tons of light during the day, but they also allow the neighbors to see everything we’re up to when the sun goes down (sorry guys). So, when we moved in we just needed to cover those bad boys asap to give ourselves some privacy. I found the cheapest two packs of white curtain panels as well as the most inexpensive curtain rods I could find all with the intention of changing the curtains…

We refinished our 100 year old floors!

Why didn’t we do this years ago?! We refinished our 100 year old floors! One of the things we loved about our house when we first saw it were the original hardwood floors. We thought the floors had such potential to be beautiful! Although they were very beat up, discolored, worn, scratched, splattered and faded, we could still envision the potential with a simple floor refinishing. But guess what, turns out refinishing a floor is expensive and time consuming, lol! Fast forward 3 years and we still had the same beat up, rough, discolored floors. Also, that awful old vinyl in the kitchen (you can check out our kitchen makeover…

    Candice Ayala’s Upcycling Challenge

A while back, a friend of mine, whose sister owns an adorable boutique, gave me this funky pair of pants. They’ve always been just a little too tight and I’ve never quite been bold enough to wear them. I love the fun print though and have been wanting to upcycle them into something for my daughter and just haven’t gotten around to it. I came across Candice Ayala’s Upcycling Challenge on Instagram and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to get to work on turning these forgotten pants into something usable! You can read about Candice’s challenge here, but basically it’s a competition to upcycle an existing piece into…
