This super simple sewing project makes the perfect baby gift AND the whole project can be done within 15 minutes! These knotted hats were a best seller in my Etsy shop, and now I’m excited to share with you how to make them. I’ve also included a free, printable PDF pattern.

For this project you will need…

  1. A stretchy, knit fabric. I wrote a post about where I shop for my favorite knit fabrics here. I LOVE all of the unique prints on Spoonflower and have a shop of my own where you can find the cute rainbow print I used in the tutorial. Click here for my rainbow print.
  2. The free, printable, knotted baby hat pattern. Enter your email below for your download.
  3. A sewing machine or serger. Sergers are wonderful to work with knits, but a regular sewing machine will do! Be sure to use a zigzag stitch if you’re using a regular sewing machine to allow for plenty of stretch.
  4. Scissors and thread to match your fabric.

Let’s get started!

  1. Print the free pattern by downloading the printable PDF above.
  2. Cut out each piece.
  3. Tape the very top piece of the hat from page two onto the main, hat piece.
  4. Place the hat piece at the fold of your fabric and cut. Repeat twice.
  5. Place the band piece at the fold of your fabric and cut. Repeat twice.
  6. With right sides together, zigzag stitch or serge each side of the band together as shown in the picture. Leave the top and bottom open.
  7. With right sides together, zigzag stitch or serge all the way around the hat pieces as shown in the picture. Leave the bottom open. I don’t find it necessary to pin this project! The pieces are small and knit fabric sticks to itself a bit.
  8. Turn the band and hat pieces right side out.
  9. Fold the band up so that no raw seams are showing. Place the band as shown in the picture over the opening of the hat.
  10. Zigzag stitch or serge all the way around to attach the band to the hat.
  11. Admire your adorable hat and make a few more because it was so quick and easy!
