Easy DIY Canvas

I love all of the adorable hand scripted canvases and prints that are happening right now. I browse the aisles of Hobby Lobby and want to buy them all. BUT as with most things, I remember our tight budget and think, “I can totally make that!”

I’m not an expert at calligraphy, but it is still possible to make a pretty, custom, hand painted canvas without being an amazing artist!

We just gave our upstairs bathroom a makeover, and I was in need of some decor as a finishing touch. I made a fun custom canvas by transferring some text I printed off of my home printer. I’ve used this method many times and always love the results.

You’ll need:

  • A home printer
  • Canvas, piece of wood, board or anything else you want to make pretty.
  • Colored chalk
  • A pen
  • Craft paint

Here we go!

I had an old canvas lying around that had an outdated little bird print on it that I made for my son’s nursery 7 years ago. Find an old print or canvas you have lying around, grab a can of white spray paint and make that old canvas fresh!

Next, get on your computer and find a pretty font. I always use dafont.com to find TONS of awesome free fonts! You can use any program to create a very simple print. I used Photoshop and made a simple 8.5×11 document and used Brusher font.

Print your document, flip it over, grab your chalk, and cover the back of your paper with a layer of chalk.

Lay your chalked up paper with the chalk side down on the canvas. Grab your pen and outline the entire text. This will transfer a light chalk line onto your canvas.

Can you see that super faint chalk outline?

Next, grab some craft paint or whatever paint you have lying around and carefully fill in your outline, then you’re done! Easy peasy!
