Soft block sewing tutorial

Soft blocks sewing tutorial

Hopefully you’ve already visited my crib sheet tutorial and are here because you have bunches of 8X8″ squares left over from all of the adorable sheets you’ve made! If not, head to your fabric scrap stash and find some fun coordinating fabrics for this quick and easy soft blocks sewing tutorial.

I whipped up 4 blocks during my toddler’s nap time. The whole process took about an hour! Quick and easy. These soft blocks are a cute little accessory for a nursery and they make a great gift!

I created my blocks using 8X8″ squares leftover from all of the crib sheets I’ve made, but you can really make them any size. Whatever scraps you have on hand will work!

Let’s get started.

You’ll need:

  • 6 squares of scrap fabric cut to any size. I used 8X8″.
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine and coordinating thread
  • batting/filler
  • Ribbons, pom pom trim or ric rac for taggies and extra cuteness. 🙂 (optional)

1. First lay out your 6 pieces in a cross shape as shown in the picture.

2. Pin each block with right sides together. I like to pin it while keeping the “cross” form as shown.

3. I begin sewing at the center, “cross” section. Sew all four sides of the center block and continue to stitch together the other seam to finish all of the seams of your “cross”.  Be sure to start sewing about a 1/4″ away from the edge of the fabric when you start sewing, and end your stitch about 1/4″ from the edge. This will allow room to connect and finish each corner of the block as the cube shape is formed and the corners come together. Take a look at the photo below and notice that I left about a 1/4″ on each block to form the corner.

4. Form your block as you stitch each side beginning your stitch about a 1/4″ in and ending each stitch about 1/4″ before sewing off the edge of the fabric. Continue all the way around until your block is formed! Leave a small opening in your final seam to turn the block right side out. Take a look below to see what your block will look like once complete.

5. Turn your block right side out through the small opening you left.

6. Stuff with your favorite filler and stitch your hole shut! Done!

I love the idea of purchasing coordinating fabric to go with a new baby’s nursery and giving these beautiful blocks as a shower gift or first Birthday present. Add a few ribbons and tags to make an adorable sensory block. These are so fun and the possibilities are endless!
